Juli in the Netherlands: ‘Excited, nervous and a little overwhelmed’

Juli Osepashvili, an international student from Georgia, is studying at Windesheim until the summer. For WIN, she is reporting on her experiences.

Studying abroad is something many students dream of, but nothing truly prepares you for the transformation it brings, until you live it. As an international student at Windesheim, I can confidently say this experience has changed my life in the best possible way.

When I first arrived in the Netherlands, I was excited, nervous and a little overwhelmed. It was my first time living far away from my family, in a new country with different languages, and expectations. Suddenly, I had to make my own decisions. From what to eat for dinner to how to handle unexpected challenges, without the comfort of home. It felt like being thrown into the deep end. But it was exactly what I needed.

Personal growth

Erasmus is more than just studying in another country. It’s about personal growth. You learn how to adapt, how to be independent, and how to take responsibility for your own life. At Windesheim, I met people from all around the world, shared stories, overcame homesickness, and built friendships that felt like family. Every day brought a new lesson in the classroom, yes, but even more so outside of it.

Academically, studying at Windesheim gave me new perspectives and different ways of learning. Group work, international collaboration, and practical assignments made me step out of my comfort zone. I developed not only academically, but also emotionally and mentally. I became more open, confident, and self-aware.

Now, as I reflect on this journey, I realize how much I’ve grown. I am more independent, more responsible, and more prepared for whatever comes next.

Change your perspective

If you ever get the chance to study abroad… take it! Don’t hesitate, don’t overthink it, just go. This experience will be one of the best things to ever happen in your life. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. You’ll grow in ways you never imagined, meet people who will change your perspective, and discover strength you didn’t know you had.

Every student should experience this. It’s not just about studying abroad. It’s about discovering who you are when the familiar is taken away — and finding out that you are stronger than you ever knew.
